OGP network kicked off in Bulgaria

The first meeting of the Organic Greenhouse Producer (OGP) network in Bulgaria was successfully held at the greenhouse facilities and experimental field of Opora Zaden Ltd. near Plovdiv on July 7, 2026. The event was organised by BIOSELENA Bulgaria.


Ten organic greenhouse producers attended the meeting, including large and small producers. Among the larger producers were "Tel-Si" EOOD, "Green to Go", "Sofina" organic farm, farmer Georgi Madjarov and the hosts from "Opora Zaden Bulgaria". Also present was Marin Genurov, who serves as the knowledge broker for the project on the Bulgarian side. A representative from "Gimel" Greenhouses was unable to attend due to a prior commitment.

After an initial overview of the BIOGREENET project's objectives and requirements, the attendees shared their views on future work and the challenges they face – both economic and agrotechnical. Among the economic issues, the main topic of discussion was finding and expanding the existing domestic market. The declaration of mixed crops and the inspections conducted by the government on greenhouse producers were also discussed. Additionally, specific agrotechnical issues in a particular region of Western Bulgaria were addressed, including the control of leaf-feeding pests on leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, and cabbage. One farmer shared practical experience in controlling pests on seedlings and parsley, as applied at her farm.

It was no coincidence that we chose the Opora Zaden facility for this meeting. The company has been operating in Bulgaria since 1991. Most greenhouse growers are familiar with it. They have a test field and a greenhouse for testing new vegetable varieties – tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. They also test new varieties of watermelons and cantaloupes under field conditions. They implement innovations and plant protection techniques in their greenhouse.

After the meeting, participants had the opportunity to tour the experimental field and the greenhouse. Installed and operational in the greenhouse is a water trap with LED lighting designed to combat night moths and the tomato leaf miner (Tuta absoluta). Developed by the company, this system is also used in other greenhouses with very good results. A demonstration was also given of the ONDO system for automated irrigation with precision fertilisation and climate control in the greenhouse and in open-field areas.
